  1. The issue about USA corporate worker wages made me wonder about what they paid workers in the Permian Basin area when the oil patch was really hot, about a decade or so ago. It was reported that many supermarkets had bulk goods in the aisles as they could not match what the patch was paying hourly.

Made me wonder how McD and similar were paying their workers out there, then, compared to the dFW metro areas. Or were they finding some people who desired the work environment of McD rather than the "in the weather, with muscle" of the oil patch?

I do know that some of the compression/transport companies seemed to "raid" car dealership service departments back then. In addition to higher wages, there were also offers of "paying for the kids' college tuition" and such, too. Many took them up on it and are still employed in that industry.

  2. That last one? Why does that not surprise me?
It's the same with pharma --- they pay a whole bunch less than we do for the same medications.

  3. Au Canada, nous avons des lois du travail qui sont respectées; aux États-Unis les lois du travail sont sapées.

  4. As Dupuis ca said here in Canada we have work laws and more. In our Constitution we have association rights which makes allow to be unionised to protect our workers rights.
Some American companies have some issues to obey to it.
ALL workers here are on our Universal Healthcare System so they don't have to pay huge fees to get a heath care insurance which is an advantage.
Last year in Montreal, Amazon shut down its warehouse here because its workers wanted to have a union. Sine then, our purchases are coming from Toronto or Ottawa.
Many workers here lost their jobs.
McDonald's has the same issue for some of its restaurant but usually the law is applied.
When 47TACO complain that Canada isn't hosting more American banks, he forget to see than we have some USA's banks here but they have to comply to our fiscal laws which are more restrictive than the one in USA.
Walmart and Costco is mostly successful here because they are complying to our laws and also are doing their best to include Canadian products on their shelves.

  5. Corporations aren't charities; they are legal entities usually organized for the purpose of doing business. Successful businesses comply with the law while trying to minimize their costs. Many capitalists believe labor should be paid living wages. Henry Ford was a greedy racist Nazi, but he paid the men who worked in his factories well enough to afford a Model T. That's just good business. Greed does not succeed--not in the long run. And those who only want big money quick, are usually bank robbers by some measure. Our economic problems can be solved with good public policy. In a democracy, capitalism can be reformed. For the present, though, we can't expect good policy from Republican public officials who are by their nature incapable of governing. They don't believe in government; they only believe in police.
