The Burning of the Books
May 10, 1933

On the evening of May 10, 1933, the Nazi German Student Association organized a large bonfire in the middle of Bebelplatz, a public square in the center of Berlin. Approximately 20,000 books were burned. The books that were burnt were thought to be treasonous and opposed to Nazism, including publications by Karl Marx, Heinrich Heine, and Sigmund Freud, among many others.

On the site where the books were burned is a glass sheet that covers an empty room with empty bookcases inside. The size of the bookshelves is very significant, as it fits the 20,000 books that were torched. The memorial also includes a plaque with an eerie quote from one of Heinrich Heine's plays that says, "Where they burn books, they will also burn people." The play was written in 1817, one hundred years before the book burning.

Lenticular Clouds

Lenticular clouds form when moist air flows up a mountain, volcano, or other geographic feature. These obstacles act like rocks in a stream, forcing air to travel around them in a stable, eddying pattern. As water-filled air rises into this current, it cools and condenses into visible clouds that drop after pushing over the summit, "sort of creating a wavelike motion," says Corwin Wright, an atmospheric physicist at the University of Bath in England. The result is a seemingly stationary cloud that hovers over the landscape like a flying saucer or ominous-looking ring of smoke.

For some odd reason I've been wanting to share with you the arrangement I've made for the disposition of my body after I die. I liken it to being put into a pressure cooker...

I want to be useful, even after death, but donating my body to science for educational purposes wasn't possible because schools and body farms wouldn't accept bodies with infectious diseases. Stupid. I checked into human composting, but it's even more expensive than aquamation. At first, I didn't like the idea of my "essence" just going down the drain. Then I realized that all of my molecules and atoms will become part of the cycle of water: evaporation, condensation, and then rain.
