  1. That first post about the wages remaining at $12.50 (the equivalent to £9.42 here in the UK) is a real surprise. Here it is £12.21 for the over 21s ($16.20). Not a fortune at all, but somewhat better.
What would it have been allowing for 55 years of inflation?

    1. June 1970 $12.50 has the same buying power as $103.03 (or £77.45) for March 2025. :0
That's the most recent date the table has.

  2. Thing is, I run into too many young people who are so totally uninterested in voting. Then, the few I do know who go to protests seem more concerned with gender pronouns and divestment of shares in corporations that have interests in Israel. What gives? (Great post though)

  3. stagnant wages have been an issue for the longest time. Youngsters are bitching about not being able to afford things and yet too few of them show up to vote to help themselves.

The ruling-class CEOs are frightened of people like Luigi; school children don't scare them at all.

  4. The first one surely had a very nice summer job because in 1971-74 when in university I had a part time job in a «Miracle Mart» (kind of old Walmart) at 0,75 cents/hour. Today the minimum wage is province of Québec is at $12,75/hour. (X 40 hours of work = $510/week or $2040/month before income taxes been taken out)
Not enough to sustain a normal life for sure when the rent of a 2 bedroom here in Montreal is around $ 1500 or even $2000/month or more.
The poorest are more and more being poorest.

  5. Last EM post. What is more to expect in USA where the GOD of NRA and violence has no limits. Also in a country where many many are always praising God and Jesus seems that his message is badly understood.
For pro life addicts, it stops at before birth because once out of the uterus, they don't give a shit of what their lives will be.
No help for a single mother, or a poor income family and no security while in school etc..

Luigi is the symptom of a sick society when big corporation are making hostage of a sick population to suck their money and be acting like gods to exclude them to obtain some benefit which they paid for.

Also, the death penalty is so inhuman, anti christian and shows that in some states cruelty is still the way to be a sadistic vengeance from another century.

  6. Vulture capitalism at its finest, a perversion and monstrosity of economics.

  7. Not buying the first one. My first summer job in 1986 paid a whopping $4/hr. My first job out of college, with a BS, in 1993 paid $8.75. And where I am in the US today even McDonald's pays $17 to start. Wages certainly have stagnated, and housing costs have certainly risen, but there are still plenty of not-trendy places in the US where you can make a decent life on "normal" wages.

    1. I'm old enough to remember working summer jobs in my college years (late 1960s-early 1970s), and most of the ones available to unskilled teens were at or near minimum wage -- i.e. $1.25/hour or around 1/10th of the amount cited as 1970 pay. The other $$ figures cited sound correct for that era and today's, so even with a drastic change in that one figure, the passage still is correct -- it supports the reality that the buying power of the least skilled workers hasn't improved a bit in 50 years.
