I've always thought of Satan as the Prometheus figure in the Garden of Eden story, offering humanity the knowledge and path to development that the evil God wanted to deny us (God's preferred alternative would apparently have been an eternity of infantile ignorance). And, yes, Eve should be considered praiseworthy for daring to accept the offer in defiance of God. casting her as the villain is one of the countless ways in which the Bible teaches its adherents to stay down, not ask questions or try to better themselves, and just blindly obey the orders of whoever holds power.
ReplyDeleteInfidel - Casting her as the villain also casts all women as troublemakers, doesn't it?
