Bastards!!!!!!! Too lazy to take to a shelter!!!!! No hearts some people have.

In principle, I agree with Maddie - it is terrible just to abandon an animal on the side of the road; especially when they are "locked up" in some sort of crate and/or cage that precludes them from being able to hunt or find water/shelter. While I truly don't believe in hell, I hope that there is a special place for people like this to go when they die that provides them the same chances.

Outside of principle (and more reality based), I kind of understand it. Most of the county shelters that you can surrender animals to (at least here in the South) now charge a fee to take in an animal that you bring in; in my county, it is $50 per animal, regardless of size, type or health; in cases like this it has become cost prohibitive ($1,400 in this case!) to take animals to the shelter and relinquish them.

Even pet rescue agencies down here are charging a fee to take an animal now. I do understand their position; most are charity and/or county-sponsored shelters and obviously, there is a cost to take in an animal and provide vet services, medications, immunizations, food and housing to an animal. However, the sad situation of that reality forces the shelters to charge when and where they can. The only way to avoid the fees is the solution we have here - if they are abandoned in a life-threatening situation (caged/confined with no food/water) the county and/or rescue agencies have no choice but to take them for free.

There is no easy answer to solve this problem - better funding for shelters? How? Stricter oversight on pet populations? Additional taxes for people that don't have pets (unless there is a medical reason)?

As usual, it's a complicated scenario all around and while it may be easy to condemn the people that did this, this isn't a black and white situation. Personally, I would have contacted a rescue agency to work with them and kept the animals until they could find decent fostering and housing situations and doled them out until the animals were safe; however, I don't know the situation of the people that did this or if they could have successfully taken that as a solution.

Just my thoughts,
RBS

It truly is sad....

I hope the reason was that they TRIED to take them to a shelter and the shelter turned them away.

This is the reason SickoRicko is required reading and viewing every day for me. Certainly, commenting on the dick pics etc. is fun and titillating, but on subjects of a more serious natters such as this, Ricko has viewers who offer incisive comments and sometimes a depth of understanding that needs to be shared. RBrysco and many others are prime examples. Thank you, Ricko, for providing this forum to your many viewers.

I heartily second this sentiment from Milleson. Your blog is essential daily reading for me, as well, and often quoted to my husband over late morning brunch. I pour over the content and the comments and sometimes copy them and forward them to my husband and friends. Cheers to you (and Jerry, of course) for sharing your interests and insights with us, your online family. We probably don't tell you often enough how much you are valued and what you truly mean to us. You're a beacon of light and hope in our world (my husband's and mine) and we thank you sincerely.

PERGE!

How about another option. Take your cats and kittens in your SUV and park along a roadside with a big sign that says "Free Cats and Kittens"! And stay with the lovable furballs until they are all taken by people who want them. It isn't their problem you're a horrible caretaker or that you have a mental illness to acquire so many cats. Go back the next day if you still have some that need homes or post on social media. Some people are awful!

Anon@4:31pm - "Free" might end up being food for a snake. (Urban myth, or not.)
