ReplyDeleteThe second image, with a young Jack LaLane on the left, were interesting to find years ago. The parts of that set were obviously shot in a remote location, where full nudity could happen without drawing attention. When I'd see him in his jumpsuit on tv, I was attracted to his good looks, but did not then know why. He always showed little bulge in his clothes, but the outdoor shots (before he went on tv) were amazing. His tv exercise shows were always fast-paced and energetic.

DeleteOnce he became popular on early American TV LaLane spent yrs trying to buy back all nude pictures and negatives he took to preserve his heterosexuality as he was a married man. While it doesn't appear uncommon for body builders - both historical or recent - to pose nude obviously he was concerned about the homoerotic nature of these pics and how it could affect his budding tv career. My guess is that a lot of closeted gay in the 1950s and 1960s watched his show. Thank goodness most of the studios/photographers wouldn't sell them back otherwise they would have been destroyed and a part of gay history would have been lost.
