Amen to it all.
ReplyDeleteTwo years ago, Providence made a big show of building a "pallet city" to help the homeless population. Took YEARS to get it approved and opened. Never heard word two about it ever since. Now it's all about how unaffordable the rent is in the city.
There are no signs that things will get better soon, sad to say.
ReplyDeleteI think we are going to see WAY MORE tents cities........
ReplyDeleteMany can consider homelessness to be the result of "poor life choices". In some cases, that might be operative. It is ALSO the easiest way to brush it aside! THEN it was discovered that many were military veterans who mustered-out and had no place to go. Then some were drug people who needed help, too. AND some were high school kids who were sleeping in their vehicles, on their own, and had part-time jobs to buy gas to get to school each day.
ReplyDeleteIt was pointed out that getting a job usually requires a somewhat stable mailing address! Modern email might tend to replace that, but not in all cases. There can be many "unknown" layers to why people are homeless. The GOVT should offer some assistance and help, as a part of their "safety net", which is not always "hand out", but can be "a hand up".
There is so much truth in that last one....
