1950s/60s

  1. ALL neat houses! One reason for the general leanness of people of this timeframe can probably be traced to the WIDTH of these houses. Meaning more walking to get from one side to the other! In prior generations, it was two-story houses (with stairs), but by the middle 1950s, it was all about sprawling width across wide lots with plenty of greenspace behind them. Different time back then.

  2. I was gonna say..."fabulous 40s?" but Anonymous made a good point about the width.

  3. Interesting plans with variations. Maybe from the 50s, because they had eat-in kitchens ("nook") and plan 1197 had no dining room at all, unlike earlier decades when a huge dining room was a must. At first I thought plan 1198 HR was just a left-right mirror image of plan 1198, but 1198 has a stairway to the basement, 1198 HR has a utility room, and 1198 JR has both. Likewise, plan 1197B has a stairway to the basement, but 1197A has no basement stairs and no utility room – so where did they put the washing machine and the dryer?

    1. W&D out in the garage or the breezeway between the house and the garage :)

  4. The day of the 3 bdm 1 bath house, soon to make way for the 3 bdm 2 bath house all with the 2 car garage.
Before the postwar boom, it was the modest 2 bdm 1 bath house with a 1 car garage.
Then homes were built for blue and white collar workers, now it seems new homes are built for executives and people of inherited wealth.
