  1. #1: Not a chance in Hell. Not in a country where ordinary buildings routinely fall apart and a state-of-the art new bridge collapsed less than a year after they finished it (Hongqi).

#2: If you extracted every last trace of gas available to form an atmosphere on Mars -- released all gases dissolved in the surface rocks, vaporized both ice caps, everything -- you'd have an atmosphere only 7% as dense as Earth's, and none of it would be oxygen. There's no magnetic field to shield the surface from lethal, carcinogenic solar radiation. The soil contains chemicals poisonous to the soil bacteria all Earthly plants need to survive. The gravity is only one-third of what it is here, which would cause numerous health problems over long periods. As for sending colonists, NASA estimates that sending just three or four people for a short visit (equivalent to the Apollo Moon missions) would cost almost half a trillion dollars. A real colony would cost a good chunk of the whole world's total economic output for several years. Colonizing Mars is flat-out impossible. It's just one of Elon Musk's silly fantasies. We need to forget about it and focus on continuing to fix Earth's climate.
