To wingnuts, the word "socialism" mutates with lightning-like rapidity. Whenever it's mentioned, they insist that it means a dreary, totalitarian, impoverished Soviet-style system, one which has "always failed". When you clarify that you instead want reforms that would move us more in the direction of Scandinavia or Germany, they denounce that as "socialism".
ReplyDeleteSocialism is not the same thing as communism, it's more like a vaccine against communism -- a benign form of a dangerous disease which immunizes the system against it. It's societies without socialism, where inequality increases without limit and the workers who produce everything are more and more ground down and exploited, which are most vulnerable to a communist revolution. By making life tolerable and giving the producers a stake in the system, socialism protects against that.

Many Socialists were imprisoned and others were executed, as the Communists saw them as a viable and direct threat to their full control and abuses. And don’t ever let these critics compare Socialists to Nazis !
When the Nazis controlled Germany among the first people sent to the first concentration camps, Buchenwald, Dachau, Oranienburg, Esterwegen Sachsenhausen and Neuengamme, were Socialist organization and political leaders and union activists !
An insult and a travesty to compare Socialists to Nazis. The Nazis were right wing nationalist and racist political extremists who put Socialist in their name to confuse gullible voters.
