The comparison with France in 1789 is becoming more and more apparent. This morning I have just seen a report in the paper which shows more gold appearing inside the White (or is it Gold) House. I really do not pretend to understand the way the government of the USA works, but having the spending of funds suspended when a budget cannot be agreed is crazy. Why can the existing budget not continue until the new one is in place? It seems to be gradually paralysing the country.

ReplyDeleteThe "affection for gold" is no different that what I've seen many older car guys do, even Veterans. Their "last fling" of sorts. Many take a somewhat normal car, fully restore it, but with a chrome-laden 800 horsepower race engine, blower on top sticking through the hood, custom wheels and such. Their lst fling to "go out with", while they still can. Of course, people oohh and aahh over it, making them smile, but a car that otherwise would have termed a huge money pit just to do something they liked. T's is there.
One way to shut down tv news coverage of food bank lines . . . have participants with MAGA hats getting "handouts". Yep, no tv coverage of that! It would be interesting to see the facial expressions of the volunteers and workers giving them their boxes and bags of food!
Although I approve of the last meme, as a descendent of the French Revolution I do not wish the same repercussions on the American people.

Tens of thousands people were arrested and killed in combats between conservatives and revolutionaries, as well as through countless delations as petty as a jealous neighbor or an envious woman. So and so that it took a military man who became general to restore order under two regimes, the Consulate and the Directoire, and finally sacred himself Emperor, going at war with most of Europe.
Many regimes then followed, alternating monarchies, a second empire with a new cast of aristocrats, and republics.
The segment of the population that steadily grew up during these times was the bourgeoisie, our equivalent of the middle class. But it also gave birth to the Haute Bourgeoisie, controlling (and being themselves) the politicians and what became the Barons of industry.
A century after the Revolution, the system was still the same, only the power and the money had been passed on from one class to another. Meanwhile, people from the working class were still struggling, even worse in the late 1800s than under Louis XVI. And they endured, in Europe as in the US, up until the 20th century social advances.

@JiEL: most countries have their share of mildly or uneducated people, it's certainly not just Americans. The reason mainly resides in that the American culture, mostly from the second half of the 20th century, made them think the US is best in every living ways. You cannot blame people for their beliefs once you acknowledge they've been indoctrinated. Better help them see the other paths they could walk, and recover once they discover they have been on a destructive one.
