I so totally agree with these memes, but I also know a fuck of a lot of people who don't want National Health Care, gun control, higher taxes, the rich to pay their hard-earned money to the government, etc. It's stunning.
ReplyDeleteNo.3 this Sweden comment is almost the same for me here in Canada. But I never paid a dime to be in a hospital room. On my provincial medicare for my prescription meds, my monthly Ozempic which is listed for $900 I pay 45$ (Can) .
ReplyDeleteA couple having a baby can both have leave paid for 4 months and even more if only one of them take it.
Also mentioning that each kids under 18yo give the family a $500/month per child allowance.
In 1949, President Harry S. Truman signed the Housing and Rent Act, which extended and modified an existing rent control program from the World War II era. The law controlled rents on existing properties.
ReplyDeleteIt gave the Housing Expediter—the official who oversaw rent controls—authority to sue for damages and regulate evictions.
The Housing Act of 1949, which Truman also signed, aimed to expand the supply of housing. It did not cap prices at $10,000. It did, however, create public housing programs, funded slum clearance and redevelopment, and expanded access to mortgage insurance to encourage new construction.
Anon@9:18am - Thanks for explaining what Truman did.
DeleteSpace deters me for going into detail---But what you said is not completely factual. "The price cap: To ensure that new houses were built at prices veterans could afford, the Truman administration introduced a cap of $10,000 on the sale price and $80 per month on rent for homes built under the program." was true under the Veterans' Emergency Housing Program. The response to the program was not not supportive by the home builders and within months removed the $10,000 cap. From this point forward the US government played a major role in the housing market for years to come.
DeleteVRCooper - Thank you.
DeleteBefore all that during the Republican caused and made worse Great Depression, FDR put in place a program where home owners with mortgages only had to pay the interest on their home loans so they could keep their homes. Once things settled down they could then go on making their regular mortgage payments. That program saved millions of Americans from losing their homes.
