'Appalling' renovation...
Posting in the subreddit r/mildlyinfuriating, a neighbor shared before-and-after pictures of a home that had been completely torn down and rebuilt on their street, destroying not only the original house but also the beautifully landscaped garden.
Appalling indeed.
Reminds me of the McMansions in S. CA.
ReplyDeleteThere were probably some un-seen issues at play with the orig house. TREE ROOTS! Cosmetically, that smaller tree in the front of the house needed to go. The tall tree on the side of the house was probably getting ready to cause foundation damage, too. The shrubs needed to be re-contoured and better controlled.
ReplyDeleteMechanically, the orig house, if sold, could not be economically brought up "to code". Plus needing a new hvac system, water pipes, and electrical upgrades. Spend the same money to demolish and start over, usually.
As to the new house, not a fam of that architectural style! Nor the sterility of the result! BETTER options exist for the lot size. Which would have been a better fit for what the prior house was and other homes on the street ARE.
Something like this happened to our house; we had a Dutch Colonial in a neighborhood of '40s. 50s & 60s era smaller frame homes with porches. We sold it to a couple who were developers but they "promised" us they'd renovate some of the interior but leave most of the house alone. 2 1/2 years later, the house went on the market again....they'd torn the house down to the ground and rebuilt it as an ultra-modern aluminum and stainless-steel monstrosity which, of course, didn't fit the neighborhood either.
ReplyDeleteIt's not the same house.
