Electras were top of the line at Buick in 1959. The standard Electra was 220 inches long and the Electra 225 was 5 inches longer with a more lavish interior, more chrome trim and special badge medallions at the back of the front wheel-wells. With the new look came new names for Buick, Le Sabre, Invicta, Electra and Electra 225 taking over from the old names Century, Super, Roadmaster and Roadmaster Limited 75. All hardtops had the additional appellation of Riviera.
ReplyDeleteThe 1959 Buicks were popular with drug smugglers as they had an area between the passenger compartment floor and the fire wall where drugs could be concealed. As a result police departments, highway patrols and the FBI would be on the lookout for 59 Buicks. Had an uncle who owned two of these he bought used, a flat top vista sedan with the wraparound rear window (in 1960, sold in 1962) and big 3 seat 9 passenger station wagon (in 1963, sold in 1966). My relatives told me the wagon was used on a trip to see the Beatles in concert at the Hollywood Bowl in August 1964. When driving up the 5 freeway to LA from Orange County people in other cars were flashing their Beatles tickets ! One car even had a sign that read Beatles or Bust. :) That car was used to haul us from OC to Fresno when we moved in Sept 1964 and to take us back again to OC in August 1965. Those that remember, don’t you just miss these luxury barges ?

Rj - These are my favorite from that era.
DeleteWe’ll never see their likes again in showrooms. A time when the designers were king, now it’s the bean counters and shareholders. Don’t tell me Detroit couldn’t bring style like this back today along with today’s reliability and safety. After all we did send men to the moon numerous times.
