OMG! How funny is it to hear this in French. I'm a French Canadian and surprised of it. But most of all how wrong they were for the future would be in 1967 which just came mostly in the 21st century and surely not with tower managers etc.. Also they didn't see how many cars would be on the highways too...
ReplyDeleteSmoking a cigar even in a air climatized car would be terrible in bad smell ...
A very American clip with the singing at the end... LOL!
I agree, Jiel! It annoyed me greatly that the husband completely ignored his wife's objection to smoking in the nice, clean air conditioning and lit up soon afterward, as if she'd not said a word. Far too typically American was this "normality" of men's privilege (a completely unchallenged notion in the 1950s, which I witnessed as a U.S. kid born in 1947).
DeleteNah, Mark, she didn't mind his smoking because the air conditioner was so good. Blech.
Delete“Pre-digested food”…?!! yummy.
ReplyDeleteSeeing those futuristic predictions was amusing, then as now, to me. Yet these were predictions of how "the well-off" would travel, as if in their own private aircraft of sorts.
ReplyDeleteIt was not uncommon to see men smoke cigars in cars, normal cars, back then. Cigars were a sign of "luxury" compared to normal cigarettes! Conspicuous consumption. Like a fine wine, the quality of the leaves determined the enjoyment of the cigar smoke (by the smoker).
With time, the nicotine in the smoke would settle on the chrome on the car's interior, coating and sealing it in the process! THAT should be a lesson of what happened inside one's lungs! The "coating and sealing" part.
@mark1147 What is typical of the 50's and after in USA is seeing the man and his son in front of the car while the women are siting in the back seats. Also the husband and son are managing all of what is going on even serving food and drinks etc.. Over all it's a very funny clip from GM.
