We should always have just taxed churches like any other business, and let them participate in politics as much as they want, like any other business. Treating religion as a special category with different rules means that the government has to be in the business of deciding what is and isn't a legitimate religion, which is obviously dangerous.
ReplyDeleteThe last one is so true. Many churches are already hurting, tax them and I bet they will shut the helll up.
ReplyDeleteAnd yet, for example, the Catholic Church, officially and in many of its most powerful representatives, is a bulwark against the fascist policies and practices of our current regime when it comes to aiding and protecting immigrants in the US.
ReplyDelete100%. Every single one of these.
ReplyDeleteWe in Province de Québec in 1960, got rid of a government party that was in phase with the Catholic Church to make us ignorants except for the wealthy who were able to get university diplomas and perpetuate the lead for those 1% of us. Then came the Liberal party who offered a HUGE change to our province back in 1962. It was the beginning of what we call «La Révolution Tranquille» (The Quiet Revolution) by which we excluded the Catholic Church out of the education system and was the instauration of our Provincial Ministry of Education for ALL Québécois. (In Canada, Education is a provincial jurisdiction).
ReplyDeleteAfter, the then Jean Lesage Prime Minister also founded the Hydro Québec, a provincial power company and bought all the private power dams under Hydro Québec company.
We since then have entered a real expansion of our society to live better and be able to access good education for ALL of us.
Decades after, every governments did add many good policies to make sure every of us can live a good life in a province where everyone can achieve their goals.
In USA many would call us a «socialist» province in a bad meaning but those don't know the real meaning of a «social-capitalist-society».
