  1. Nice places. I wonder what the square platform on the water in front of the last one is for.

    1. Maybe they let people take a swim or go fishing! That looks like a raft to me.

    1. Yacht dock? Oh, I see what you mean. For a moment I thought you were swearing in Yiddish or something :)

  4. And the proud Portlandian quietly slips in a picture of the Pittock Mansion. Let's hear it for the local bling! Not quite up to the proportions of the Vanderbilt Estate but noteworthy just the same.

  5. Obscene displays of wealth, many of which would crumble into dust unless they are maintained by public funds.

  7. We have so many castles, palaces, estates and manor houses in Europe that are in disrepair or abandoned because even their wealthy owners find they cannot afford the upkeep. Just a total waste of wealth, wealth that could have gone to far better use.
Today honor noblesse oblige is missing among many of the wealthy.
The kings of France and the czars of Russia lived off their abused people and look what happened ! The very wealthy of today will meet the same fate if they do not control their greed and entitlement.
