ReplyDeleteA Harbor Death and the Promise of Life
Autopsy Team - Doctor, here's the body for the postmortem autopsy.
Lead Pathologist - We'll dispense with that on this corpse.
Team - But shouldn't the manner and cause of death be a matter of public record?
Lead - Not in this case. We all know the cause of death. There's no need to examine the remains any further, she was obviously murdered.
Team - Bur doctor, how can you be so certain?
Lead - Look at her visible wounds. She was bludgeoned with some kind of lantern or torch and the fingers on her left hand show signs of some heavy tome being ripped from her grasp to finish the job.
Team - Isn't it customary procedure to open the body and document other signs of trauma?
Lead - That isn't possible in this case because her body is very old and her turquoise robe is hardened from her exposure to the elements. In any case, what we would most likely find is the remains of a broken heart. When and where was the body found?
Team - In the early morning hours of November 6th this year and the police report states the body was found in New York Harbor, you know, close to that Ellis Island place where most of the early immigrants were processed after leaving their homes and some family members in the war-torn countries of the world.
Lead - Yes, I'm familiar with the location. If you check the police report, by now they've located a torch with a flame that has been extinguished and a waterlogged copy the the Declaration of Independence. Check with the authorities, my recommendation is to return the remains, along with her torch and book, and let her rest in the dark depths of the harbor. Along with her, we'll wait and see what America's next chapter will be, and what monument will be erected on her pedestal. Hopefully a symbol to America's strong resilient heart and resolve to continue providing a beacon of light to the rest of the world that her people are united for the common good and the betterment of all its diverse population; from the Native Indigenous Indians whose land was forcefully acquired to the next Ukrainian war orphan seeking safety and solace. Let it be so...
Milleson - Well done. It gave me goosebumps.
