There are many abandoned estates in Europe in decrepit conditions and worse.
An estate in Ireland has been in ruins since it was set afire during the abuses of the Royal Irish Constalbulary (aka the Blacks and Tans) in 1921. The lord and lady of the house were murdered by the RIC, falsely accused of not being loyal to the Crown. And their great home with its fine art and furnishings was pilfered and burnt to the ground ! Another estate in the former East Germany near Schwerin, was confiscated from a Polish countess (who was the widow of a German count who was killed in Ww 1) by the Nazi’s. The countess was later falsely accused of being a spy of the Polish government and executed. The estate was given to a corrupt Nazi official who then abandoned it with the advance of Russian troops. The estate was destroyed by artillery fire towards the end of Ww2. And there are many more estates like this in Europe with similar histories. Today most estates are abandoned because the owners have not the resources to maintain them, and so it goes !
