I love the fact that the classic, instantly recognizable wood block print "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" of 1831 by the Japanese Master Katsushika Hokusai isn't really even about the wave. It's one of a series of 36 wood block prints he created honoring Mount Fuji. As is typical of Japanese art, the strength of the famous mountain is depicted with subtlety, seen stalwart in the background as the three tiny fishing boats struggle against the monstrous wave up front.
ReplyDeleteThe work has since become iconic. I've even seen it used as an emoji! It's beauty & power are undeniably timeless. This .gif is excellent as well.
Thanks Rick!
