Wonderful history lesson. I know you love your architecture. The Royal Pavilion at Brighton is an eyeful, too. Take a look. It's good to be the king!
I worked in Brighton for a company which once wanted to buy the West Pier (before it got in such a lamentable state of course). They'd refurbish it & wanted to put a casino on the end. The local council said no!
I visited Brighton with friends the summer after 9/11, my only trip (so far) out of the country, and we had the chance to tour the Royal Pavilion, as well as the pier. Was very sad to hear of the fire and to see the remnants of a beautiful landmark.
Anonymous (2). If you visited after 9/11 then you would have visited the Palace Pier which is still operating. The West Pier was closed to the public in 1975 & deteriorated thereafter, it was destroyed by fire in 2003 and all that remains is what you see now.

Brighton pier was once a great place in its day but now a ruin and to expensive to rebuild. Colin, UK 🇬🇧
Milleson - The Royal Pavilion is very stunning. Thanks.
Colin - That's a shame.
Very pretty, but why???

Anon@9:42am - Even in a sort of death, the structure is still beautiful.
