An end to an era. Wasn't totally behind the use of those shuttles, or maybe it was the lack of anything really interesting DONE with them. Still, supposedly they are finally looking into a manned Mars trip again...
Not sure i understand; if these aernt the space shuttles what are they? About said shuttles...whilst the 86 disaster was down to a combination of negligence and accident, I think it was the 2003 disaster that signalled the end to the program. I have a bootleg audio tape of the engineers that worked on it and monitored its final descent and the concensus is it was cobbled together using bits and pieces from previous shuttles. Bt the end of the last century it had become too expensive to build/maintain space shuttles; in the current economic climate its simply unsustainable to spend so much on what effectively in the last 15 years in particular is nothing more than exploratory missions instead of inventing/designing missions. When the missions first began, they helped discover tissue sampling for breast cancer, sat-navs and even non-stick frying pans[!]...these days, not so much. The shuttles have had their day now. Two options for the future? The ISS [ International Space Station ]...no-one can decide whether it should be a research station or a U.N in space. Mission to Mars? Maybe in 30 years or so...again its too expensive to fund a mission now and besides no astronauts have ventured that far yet. Obamas grandchildren will be seeing the manned first mission, its so far in the future. Space sadly is out of the question at the moment...
The sad - and scary - part of this coming to an end is that if anything goes wrong up there now with our guys, we are totally dependent on the Russians to help them. While we are on fairly good terms with Putin now, who knows about next year, or the years after that.

Greg - There are better things to spend money on than going to Mars.
ReplyDeleteKarl - They ARE shuttles, just not the last voyage of the Atlantis.
