Juan de la Cierva of Spain invented the autogiro in 1923. Seven years later, when this photo was taken, the whirlybirds were in the news often. Amelia Earhart took a passenger up in an autogiro in Willow Grove, Pa., and an autogiro flew across the English Channel. One inventor in 1930 predicted that most airplanes of the future "would be autogiros or something better," and would travel 200 miles per hour and carry seven tons Photo: NY Times Photo Archives

Pitcairn Autogyros
ReplyDeletePitcairn and Kellet were the manufacturers of autogyros/gyrocopters in the USA.
My grandfather witnessed a flight demonstration of an autogyro in 1933, as it flew over several ocean liners at the terminal docks of NYC.
He told me it was a sight to behold as the autogyro flew low over the Rex and the Ile de France. A respite from the Great Depression for many in attendance on that spring day.
