I keep forgetting to mention that I have received notice from the company that provides those gold stars, that it is going out of business. That means the stars will disappear on December 21st.

I'll do my best to find a replacement but I'm not holding my breath. These were the simplest I found at the time.

No, Canada hasn’t launched a suicide prevention hotline for LGBTQ+ Americans

Misinformation Alert: There have been false claims circulating online suggesting that 1-877-330-6366 is a new national suicide crisis line for everyone in the U.S. due to recent political developments. This is incorrect, as it is strictly the Canadian number for Trans Lifeline. Trans Lifeline is a non-profit organization providing a peer support and crisis hotline run by trans people for transgender and questioning individuals. They offer support and resources, even for those not in immediate crisis. Their US number is (877) 565-8860. Operating Hours: As of January 1, 2024, Trans Lifeline's operating hours have been reduced due to budgetary restrictions. The hotline is available Monday-Friday, 10 AM to 6 PM Pacific time (1 PM to 9 PM Eastern time).

Drag artists are getting attacked. This safety handbook aims to help.

Pride is a busy time for drag artists — and not always an easy one. Last year, drag king Freddie Hercury said they received a bomb threat on Facebook ahead of a gig in Niagara Falls.

"And I was like, 'OK, um, well that doesn't make me feel great,'" Hercury said.

Her­cury reached out for help to Qommittee (pronounced "committee") — a network of drag performers and allies who aim to help people in just these situations.

"They were immediately responsive," Hercury said. "And really just walked me through the process of how I wanted to handle it."

Nighttime migratory birds need our help...

Every year, billions of birds migrate north in the spring and south in the fall, the majority of them flying at night, navigating with the night sky. However, as they pass over big cities on their way, they can become disoriented by bright artificial lights and skyglow, often causing them to collide with buildings or windows.

From hummingbirds and warblers to sparrows and geese, millions of birds migrate across North America every year, covering hundreds to thousands of miles. Most of these birds, some that weigh as little as half an ounce, make this remarkable and perilous journey at night, visualizing the magnetic pull of the earth and using the moon and stars to set their course. By reducing skyglow over our cities, we can help them make it to their desti­na­tions safely.

Protecting Pride Events from Armed Extremist Activity

Private paramilitary groups have no authority to detain, attack, or attempt to police drag performers or gender-nonconforming persons at Pride events.

What types of activities by armed extremists are considered unlawful?

State and federal laws prohibit violence against Pride participants. But state laws also prohibit private paramilitary activity, even where it does not involve physical violence against a targeted person or persons. All 50 states prohibit private, unauthorized militias from engaging in activities reserved for the official state militia (for example, the National Guard), including law enforce­ment activities. Nearly every state constitution prohibits groups func­tioning as military units from operating out­side the authority of the state government. Dozens of state statutes prohibit groups of people from organizing as private military units without govern­mental authorization; dozens of state statutes criminalize para­mili­tary activity; and many states prohibit the false assumption of law enforcement duties and/or the wearing of uniforms confusingly similar to military uniforms.10 State-specific fact sheets from ICAP are available here for further reference.

This means that armed groups that self-deploy to Pride events and stake out tactical positions, operate in military-style formations, or purport to engage in law enforcement functions like policing, pa­trol­ling crowds, or protecting property, are likely in violation of state law. Armed extremists who attempt to intimidate others or perform law enforcement functions may also be violating state laws.
