It's almost a hundred years now since Debs died. It's been a long wait.
ReplyDeleteWe could use a straight talker like him today. I can hardly imagine what he'd say about how much more unequal the distribution of wealth has become. He'd probably despise us for tolerating it.
We are so entrenched in this period of the "mega-haves" and the "have nots" that digging out from the disparity of this situation is improbable, if not impossible. Only when people of extraordinary wealth make a conscious decision that they can live just as comfortably on 1 billion as they can on 100 billion dollars, then distribute the difference to charities and acts that will enrich society as a whole. Few, if any, will ever be that conscious.

ReplyDeleteIn the 50-60's the fear of COMUNISM like in USSR did include socialism which aren't the same.
It's also about keeping people in ignorance to maintain control on their wealth over the good of the people.
IF Americans could know how many other countries, like Canada, France, UK, Sweden etc, are social-democracies with laws and social systems to help their population to live better lives.
The universal health care system is just one example of the benefit made for ALL citizens.
USA is now trapped in this strangling system and with the national Christian influence, racism, bigotry etc.. the web of those controlling your country will never let go their grip on your society.
Again, money is the base of your democracy which is another factor to control your politic.
