The problem I have is that, thanks to the pandemic in 2020, it's like that ripped the bandage off the need for, just bold-faced, bullshit greed. Like corporations learned they can charge ANYTHING they want, offer some lame-assed excuse ("Supply chain!", "Chip shortage!") and keep charging record high prices.

DeleteIn 1973, in a college course, we were given a NCR (National Cash Register Company) book on profit margins of various businesses. For "grocery stores", I was shocked that their net profit margins were so low! Approx 1%. Back then the vast majority of "grocery stores" just sold groceries. With a few "general purpose" items shoppers might need at home. It all fit together.
ReplyDeleteIn MODERN times, the "grocery store" that does not also have a pharmacy is the exception. OR a flower shop! Or a coffee area (as in Starbucks). AND a small selection of patio furniture in some cases! In other words, what's inside that GROCERY STORE is not all groceries! Especially with the pharmacy, I suspect THAT might be where their increased "inside the building" profits might be coming from.
NOT to discount the fact that they might be adding to their basic GROCDRY prices a bit, but when they do, they just drive business to WalMart and the "dollar stores". A tricky mix!
