  2. Oh, ChristJesus, that is so true. Imagine, a voter who hasn't read one single book in the past year.

  3. Back before internet and SMS, Ann Lander said that she could guess a letter was coming from a Canadian writer because it was well written and with good English compared to American ones.
In the 70's I was teaching French and maths (I'm a French Canadian in Province of Québec) and my students did almost well in maths in class but were not good in the exams.
With other teachers in my group we found out that they couldn't solve written math problems as they are no good on reading them. Some couldn't even understand the meaning of it as they were reading one syllable at the time and once at they and didn't understand the whole meaning of the problem.
So reading is the base for being well educated in any matters.

    1. JiEl, I think the Economist this issue has an article about University students not being able to understand the first page of Charles Dickons' Bleak House.
They can't assign more than one book per semester because the students just can't handle it.

    2. Have a relation who works for Cal State Fullerton. They figure 1/3 of the students are not ready for college course work and others are just not college material. Some students goof around like they’re in high school ! Others think they should get a diploma with little effort.
When I worked as a clerk for a major insurance company we had some new employees straight of college who felt they should have run the place. :\
And now we have the mess of ignorant citizens and voters, some willfully so. :(

    2. Like the shadow of the Perons in Argentina, sadly a country of great potential not realized, a basket case just like our country is becoming.
