Same here, Anonymous! I was based in Portland for a couple weeks in Nov. 1974 and walked over at least one of these bridges from my downtown hotel to suburban-style neighborhoods on the other side of the Willamette River. Not sure which bridge I traversed, and I think my old downtown hotel (approx. 12-15 stories tall, red brick, classic wood-paneled lobby & spacious rooms) may have been razed and a new tower replaced it. Sure don't recognize anything in recent photos of the city's downtown, but I had tons of fun during my stay -- lived the high life, so to speak, and gay guys were all over downtown -- a Hamburger Mary's restaurant seemed a favorite cruising spot (as well as a place to get delicious eats). Good times for a young guy just comin' outta the closet!

I never got to know this bridge, I visited the city more than 20 years ago.

ReplyDeleteI was in Portland on business (explaining why I said "based") -- my home then and now was/is the Washington DC area.
ReplyDeleteAnon@3:22pm & mark1147 - The bridge is fairly new, having opened in 2015.
