I Am Vindicated...

Yesterday, Big Whack Attack posted a meme that made me curious as to what an Oxford Comma was...

I always thought there needed to be a comma in lists of more than three things...

  1. If everyone used the Oxford comma, things would be much clearer, but it would cost the world a lot of unintentional humor.

  2. Let's eat Grandma! Let's eat, Grandma! I still use the Oxford Comma when listing three or more items.

  3. I saw that meme yesterday and had to do research, too. I don't recall using the Oxford comma because all those years ago in grade school, I can remember Mrs. Davis telling us that it was unnecessary and a waste of a good comma. I have noticed recently that spell-check and auto-correct when texting is urging me to add many commas, Oxford or other, in my texts.

  4. As someone who writes (fiction and non-fiction), I can say that comma is essential for clarification.

  5. I like the comma; but the semicolon should be embraced more frequently!

  6. I knew what the Oxford comma is, but I thought it was standard British usage, and omitting it was standard American usage. After looking it up, I was wrong; there are many American style guides (though not all) that recommend using it.
