In Memoriam
Richard Chamberlain

  1. Actor of range. From the sympathetic young Dr Kildare, the piece of work husband in Petulia, a comedic Musketeer to the conflicted priest in Thornbirds.
As well as being an actor he was a sergeant in the Army. At 90 years Chamberlain lived a life well lived.

    1. Unfortunately, his true life was not well-lived, choosing as did many actors at that time to live his true life in the celluloid closet. Knowing that the knowledge of his homosexuality would hinder his chances for future roles, he reluctantly chose a life of denial until later in his career and did have a lengthy relationship with another man in the entertainment industry, and lived comfortably with him in Hawaii for many years. I wonder what he might think of today's RRR(religious right republicans), hell-bent on pushing us back into the closet and erasing us from history. Our fight for our rights is not over.

    2. Well remember back in the day Americans were very homophobic and if Chamberlain or anyone else like Tab Hunter, Anthony Perkins, Rock Hudson, Liberace etc came out their careers would have been in ruins and they like many homosexuals at that time would have been left unemployable. They would have had to face a very angry public, disappointed fans who would have more than likely abandoned them and a studio system hell bent on making examples of them. The fifties weren’t so nifty.
The only fault I can find with them was their complicit silence when the AIDS epedemic started in the early 1980’s. Those men should have come out together to the public and publicly support men suffering from AIDS and put pressure on everyone to do more.

  3. Handsome and decent soul, a life well lived, in private and on the world stage . RIP kind Sir. As a young lad I was attracted to home with his good looks and genial personality. Hug from Bob in the UK

  4. Thank you for posting SR! Boy oh boy, did I have a thing for Father Ralph de Bricassart (much like Stanwyck!)

  5. I remember watching "Dr. Kildare." Then he left Hollywood to go study in London. When he returned, he lit Hollywood on fire with TV movies and mini-series. He was a lot more talented than people thought.

  6. My first crush! After Robin. I was still to young to follow "Dr. Kildare", but I knew I was captivated by him. Even if I didn't know what captivated meant.
