1949 Bristol

9 comments:

  1. Bristol was a British aircraft company that decided to get into the luxury auto market after Ww2.
No coincidence that the Bristol looks like a BMW, as it was built with the plans of the BMW 327 with the help of BMW engineer Fritz Fiedler in 1947, and before that in 1946 Bristol had acquired a controlling interest in Frazer Nash of England that was licensed to build the BMW 328. Strange how bitter enemies become dear friends :) BMW before WW2 had their factory in Eisenach Thuringia which after the war was in the Soviet Zone of what became the DDR-East Germany. After the war BMW moved to Munich and the Eisenach factory made EMW cars for East Europe. EMW’s were rehashed BMW’s from 1939, as is this Bristol 401.

    1. I must add the top picture is the 401 built from 1948-1953, the bottom picture is the improved 403 built from 1953-1955.

    2. Rj - Thanks for all of that background info. I didn't even noticed that the cars were different models.

  4. Bristol's were luxury cars that in the 1950's cost as much as a Bentley. Check out the Bristol 410 for a stunner.

  5. The 1955 Bristol 411 was a stunner as well. Came as either a 2 door coupe or a 4 door sedan. But they were as expensive as Bentley's who they rivalled for a short period of time.

    1. Anon@11:45am - The closest Google could get me was the 55 Bristol 405 and it's variations.
