2025.0112.0002...
I found out about this only yesterday...
Anita Bryant, popular singer who became vocal opponent of gay rights, dies at 84
March 25, 1940, a day(and an evil woman) which will live in infamy forever(with thanks to FDR). December 16, 2024, a day we will celebrate repeatedly, the death of a judgmental, self-righteous, god-fearing, christian bigot.
Sorry but I never was aware abouit this «bigot idiot» woman. This is one difference of being Canadians as we have some of those narrow minded people but here they tend to not have any influence on our society and politic. We really have a seperation of religion and politic.
Anita Bryant, she should have kept to singing for her own sake. In the beginning that Florida sunshine tree shined brightly with her singing its praises, but when she went on her anti-gay rant, that Florida sunshine tree didn’t have much sunshine with her around. :( And John Briggs, the bigoted senator from Orange County Ca., riding on the coattails like a typical opportunistic politician with his anti-homosexual Briggs Initiative in California. Much prefer to remember Ruth Shack who introduced the ordinance protecting gays and lesbians from discrimination in Dade County, and those activists that authored the ordinance and others who led the protest against gay and lesbian discrimination in Florida, and those activists and voters in California that defeated the Briggs Initiative. :) -Rj
Interesting that after her "comments", her singing career took a nosedive quite quickly. Opening her mouth to sing was good, but when she talked, something else. Wondering if FL orange juice sales decreased, too?
Orange juice sales did start to plummet and the orange growers of Florida started distancing them from Bryant, also the threat to boycott Florida oranges and oj did not help.
Carol Burnett did a great skit on her show about the whole Bryant controversy. Carol, a friend of the LGBT community, had many co-workers who worked on her show that were LGBT. From Bob Mackey who designed her costumes, and guest Jim Nabors to some of the male dancers on her show. I’m sure she saw the hurt this caused them and stepped up to the plate with her comedy sketch. -CA jock
That woman caused a lot of pain in a lot of lives. I saw a photo of her husband at the time. He was a major cutie. Turns out...HE WAS GAY! Schadenfreude ist die beste freude, I always say.
Thanks so much for saying so, LeftField -- I was beginning to wonder if my memory of the gay husband was fantasy or not! My favorite uncle was gay and lived in Miami area back then -- he had a huge network of great connections for inside info (he was kind of the area's gay godfather among longtime gay & lesbian residents), and I recall him saying Anita's husband had been arrested at a public toilet near the beach, somewhere along the coast road Route A1A.
I need to add -- husband's arrest and legal problems led directly to their divorce a couple years later, I seem to recall Uncle Bill telling me. That sure explains why her career never resumed -- her churchy fans couldn't help but think about the damned gays anytime she performed or fund-raised.
