  1. Looking at these older floor plans from this time frame always fills me with wonder - not for the innovations that have been become part of mainstay today (or the things lost like milk doors and laundry chutes), but mainly in the huge difference in size from houses back then to houses of today.

It's amazing to me to think that people would be these houses and be able to live happily, raise a family and retire in without ever wanting or needing any more; indeed, "The Cheney" above is less than 800 square feet in size (roughly!) yet has enough space for a family (Mom, Dad, Two Kids)! How did four people survive with one bathroom, or sharing a bedroom? While I have lived in cramped spaces or with roommates/lovers before, I think the lack of privacy would be the biggest hindrance in my life today!

We (the US) have become the victims of massive consumption whether it be goods, food or space - and I'm guilty too (my house is 4000sq ft on an acre and it's just me and the dog!). But I find it a fun exercise to try to imagine my grandparents or great-grandparents raising the families they did in these small houses!

    Thanks Rick!

    1. RBrysco - 4000sq on an acre? Where are you located? Do you need a 77 year old houseboy who can cook and loves dogs? I'm yours! LOL
