More complex than the typical prefabs. Fascinating.
ReplyDeleteI always find these old plans fascinating. As usual, every plan has to have a big dining room, bigger than the kitchen, because kitchens were evidently not important to them (the kitchen dimensions in the last plan include part of the stairwell, so it’s actually smaller). The chimney has to go above the roofline for good ventilation, so the designer should put it on a tall end wall like the third plan, not on a shorter wall like the first two plans. In particular, the chimney in the first plan looks like an industrial smokestack. Ugly! The first plan also has a strange “dressing room” with a bed off of the living room (who would get dressed there? Who would sleep there?), and next to the front door, a closet with a window. Bizarre.
ReplyDeleteUnashamed Male - The chimney placement is dictated by the fireplace in the living room. Not much they can do about that. Yeah, that dressing room is very odd.
DeleteRick, there’s EVERYTHING that the designer can do about that. He’s the designer. He could put the fireplace on the front wall, instead of the side wall. He could re-design the second story to be the same size as the first story, with vertical outside walls, and the roof only covering the attic in the third story. Etc. etc. But no, he came up with this design. Suppose the design had the fireplace on a patio outside the house, with a smokestack-like chimney. Would you say “that’s where the fireplace is, so he had no choice?” No, you would say it’s a stupid design.
DeleteI forgot to mention in the second plan, the bedroom windows are so close to the chimney that there is no room for the shutter – even the drawing shows the shutter at a strange angle because there's no room. Hey, designer, omit the shutters instead of advertising your design incompetence!
