  4. He would've gotten another 4 years if Reagan hadn't played games via back door channels to Iran.

  5. What a difference 35 years makes. After President Carter we elected Reagan, Bush Sr., Clinton, Bush Jr., Obama. Some honorable and qualified, some not so much. Other than the assassination attempt on Reagan, we accepted the rule of law and the vote of the people(yes, even with that damned electoral college) and went about our daily lives.
I'm sure many of us saw what was to come with Obama's victory. It became obvious that we were a country with many flaws and a large segment of the population had racism and discrimination pulsing through their veins.
Then came 2015 and the misogynists reared their ugly heads to prevent the only real choice from taking office. What we were handed was a failed human being with every worst trait in the lexicon, so inept and totally unqualified to govern. But his supporting populace loved him for giving them permission to lie, hate, defame, belittle and cheat as he has done.
And here we are again; deciding if a competent, capable woman can defeat an idiotic buffoon and will win this critical election even with the gerrymandering, voter suppression and fake electors that the opposition party have successfully achieved.
I've framed this tribute to Jimmy Carter as a political rant but hope you see where this is going. Mr. Carter may not have been the most effectual president in our history, but he towers over those that came before and some after. His legacy is secure and his life after the White House has been exemplary with his many charitable acts on behalf of Habitat For Humanity.
The vile and pernicious history and legacy of #45 is also secure and will be written by scholars who witnessed the chaos, as did we all. Some will chose not to believe. I have no hope for them.

  7. One big thing to thank Pres. Carter for (and too seldom mentioned) are his decades-long efforts in support of conquering a genuinely deadly bit of vermin, the guinea worm.
I'm also always glad to remember what is perhaps his brightest achievement while in office, the results of which were the focus of many of my own years in the U.S. govt. -- hosting, conducting, and successfully concluding the negotiations that resulted in a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. (All through the 1980s and the early 1990s, I helped administer agricultural research programs promoting that bilateral contact and cooperation, with American scientists involved as expert technical advisors to the Egyptian and Israeli research teams.)
