Luigi Stipa’s dream machine of the air.
The Stipa’s speed was very slow at about 80 mph ! And the aircraft had a landing speed of about 40 mph.
In aerodynamics it was a mixed bag of an intriguing design with too much drag. The Caproni company (1908-1950) took on many unusual projects that proved to be the company’s undoing. Caproni had developed the Campini N1, one the first jet aircraft in 1940. And after the war, Caproni helped develope the front wheel drive Cemsa sedan with independent suspension and a small flat four motor, which led to Caproni’s bankruptcy. Today all that is left is the Caproni museum, the largest aeronautics museum in Italy and in part run by the family, in Trento, Italy. -Rj
