1950s/60s

MAYBE it's because I grew up back then, but many of these houses make so much more sense than many of the "peaked-roof" dwellings being built today. Better floorplans and interior detailing. Smaller, too! No need for a 2400sq ft house, just because you can. Modernize the exteriors a bit and put in massive amounts of insulation, plus more energy-efficient hvac, and these houses could be stylish and "cheap to keep" (just like 1980s Toyotas).

THANKS for posting these! Lots of great memories of how things were when taxes were higher and the economy was booming!

Love the first house. Very classy.

The high tax rates and especially the tax codes at the time (1950s/1960s) compelled the well off to invest their money, not accumulate it. Of course back then most of the money they invested was invested in the USA, not overseas like today. No investment here in the USA, no economy here in the USA. With that going on it only leads to the gradual and severe erosion of the middle class. -Rj
