Although some wars have involved religion, and the current conduct of both Israel and Hamas is inexcusable, you certainly CAN start a war without religion. Consider: the Civil War, fought over slavery, not religion, (2) the Napoleonic Wars, with France (a Catholic country) invading other mostly Catholic countries in Europe, (3) World War II, with Germany and Japan invading other countries for territorial expansion, not religion. The list goes on. I think most wars were actually fought over territory, not religion.
