The Mark Hopkins mansion is now the site of the famous Mark Hopkins Hotel in San Francisco. The fire in the aftermath of the great earthquake of 1906 did far more damage than the quake itself. At that time so many houses and buildings were built entirely of wood making the city of San Francisco a tinderbox. My family knew from experience, when my great-grandfather's home collapsed in the quake and the next day his cannery burnt completely down from the fire. The stress of helping to fight the fire to save his business and losing everything he had worked so hard for caused my great-grandfather to suffer a stroke that killed him several weeks after the quake. -Rj
This ostentatious example of wealth, Mark Hopkins Jr, his wife who was his first cousin and actually lived in the house, her interior decorator who was 22 years her junior who she later married and an adopted son who was written out the will is a movie begging to be made. Hot stuff going on in addition to the devastating fire in San Francisco at the turn of the century.
#3 my fav here
ReplyDeleteWow.... The mansion was destroyed by the fires in the aftermath of the earthquake. Survive the quake - then burn down. How wild was that?
