  5. They're also called serpentine walls. Thomas Jefferson used them when he designed the University of Virginia. They are actually very practical, because they resist falling over sideways like a much thicker wall, while using far fewer bricks.

  6. As Jefferson was known to have an eye for adaptation...it was probably a brick version, of the quite prevalent at the time, "split-rail' fence.
