  1. Thanks for posting this, Rick. I remember as a kid that the show had some controversy but didn't understand or even like the show. I have better understanding now. His obit in The Hollywood Reporter is incredible. Funny..I always thought Tommy was the younger. That was pretty much his persona.
I never realized they had such powerhouse musicians on their show.
Related to that, I see that this incredible live performance of Bobbie Gentry singing her iconic song is from The Smothers Brothers Show. I absolutely love this. The set design is incredible, as is her performance.

(This clip is clearer but there's another clip with a split second of Dick introducing her.)

  4. When they were on TV, I thought they were neat and good looking. Some of their stuff seemed a bit bland (in delivery), but was really edgy and borderline-controversial at the time. It was not until more recently that I learned of their great orientations and ideas which were "radical" to some back then. There was more to them than was first apparent. Great guys and performers! RIP our friend!

  5. I remember watching the S-B Comedy Hour and was stunned (along with many others) when the show was abruptly canceled over....politics! My favorite album of theirs: "The Two Sides of the Smothers Brothers." One side their comedy routines, the other their beautiful blend of harmony.

  6. I was too young to understand their humour and too young to understand its controversy.

  7. OMG! What a sad news and those two brothers were part of my teens time.

Even if I'm a French Canadian Québécois, I'm bilingual since 4yo and always did watch English TV channels.
Remembering the S.Bros makong me laugh with their special humor.

    PS. How old was he?

    RIP.Tom

  8. My comments are more in line with the first poster; I had to "Grow into" their sensibility. Now I enjoy them. And, they both both have aged well...especially in those later pix of Tom.

  9. Tom was definitely the funnier (and the hotter!) of the two Smothers Brothers. Another wonderful voice lost.

Thank you for this tribute, Rick.

  10. These guys were part of my college life. Their show along with Laugh-In and Batman I always watched either at the TV room of the student union or my dorm. I loved Tea with Goldie and the singer Jennifer Warren who was a regular on the show. According to what I read today in the Washington Post I am, more or less, right on track to join Tommy at the time of my death. As we said back then, "Bummer!" So in these years my youth is dying all around me. Funny but back then I was freaking out about dying in Vietnam, and now just about dying. So far I'm not up to it, ha! But fuck me! right? It is what it is. It is said that on the tombstone of W. C. Fields it reads, "I rather be in Philadelphia," and he absolutely hated Philadelphia.

I don't know if one of the brother's used to say it in his act, but one always said, "Well Mom did love you best!!!" I thought they had a good show, though I was a young teenager at best, I thought Tom was good looking. May you RIP Tom Smothers.
