2023.1123.0007...
After it had been pointed out to me by more than one person that yesterday was a noteworthy date, I would be remiss if I did not post this...
Ever since that fateful day it seems our nation has been in a death spiral. What the hell happened ? So much promise and possibilities JFK had given our nation. When he traveled to other countries, he left such an impact and an impression of that same promise and possibilities for them to thunderous applause. Whether it be Berlin, London, Paris, Rome, Vienna, Ottawa, Mexico City, Caracas, Bogota or his final trip to Ireland, no American president since that time has come close. You can see and hear for yourselves on the internet. As I was told that Thanksgiving Day in 1963, no one in our family could eat. It wasn't the same, it was as if a beloved family member had died. (I was just an infant then) JFK is gone but he left a torch for us to carry to give us that promise and those possibilities. That torch lights the darkness, let us keep it held high. - Rj
I concur, JFK was the light for the world, back then. An "American Dream" of sorts, a wounded war veteran who now was President of the USA. An American war hero who fought Fascism in Europe and was now President. He brought a youthful attitude to the Presidency and the nation, which was reflected in how many companies advertised to "the youth market" that had suddenly emerged. Democrats from Mass. and Texas were now running the country and times were good.
JFK, "The Youthful President" put physical education back into the public schools. Investing in the physical prowess of our nation, physically and mentally. A state of mind as we proved that All Things Are Possible, even going to the Moon. It was a great time to live in the USA!
Fortunately, many of the things he started were continued in his honor. LBJ did well, too, in continuing to help the lower economic levels of the USA, no matter their skin color.
JFK made us aware that we COULD follow our dreams to greatness, personally and as a country. Even dreaming about space travel becoming reality.
It would have been interesting to see where JFK could have taken us if he had had two full terms as President. With at least 4 more years of Democrats in the White House. LBJ did well, though, with Medicare and such being as impactful as Social Security had earlier been.
National politics has always been about "power struggles and influence". In so many areas, back then, the USA and USA companies were near the top of their game. The economy was booming as taxes were much higher than they now are. (Where's the lesson in that??)
JFK's legacy is still alive! It amazing the number of visitors who trek to Dallas to visit the 6th Floor Museum and take pictures of the street where those shots hit their marks, 60 years ago. Many from foreign countries! JFK still holds a spot in World History, even today, which is amazing.
I just finished watching an excellent program "JFK: Breaking The News" on the local PBS station. Check you local PBS station schedule as it is to be shown at 3pm CST on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, at least in DFW, TX. It might also be on a podcast somewhere?

ReplyDeleteA very sad, somber, stoic days in American history.
I was only 4 yrs old, but I have a memory of walking by the television and witnessing Oswald getting shot by Ruby.
Of course, over the years, I have seen on television the 5 days in November.
Ever since that fateful day it seems our nation has been in a death spiral.

We're a far, far cry from that now, aren't we?
ReplyDeleteNot that he was perfect, but compared to today's crowd?? The closest we got was Obama.
Thanks a lot for your post
