C.M. Forbes Mansion, 1892

  1. I would have loved to have toured this if it was still around. I believe it was demolished in or around the early 30's. What a shame it couldn't have been saved.

Big Dude- I believe it was in Portland, but don't quote me, lol.

  3. The CM Forbes house has always been one of the most fascinating mansions to me... built in 1892, and demolished in 1929. And yes, Mistress Maddie - it was in Portland, OR.

It was considered one of the most amazing and over-the-top examples of Queen Anne Victorians and was the penultimate when it came to East Lake design - there was almost no surface that wasn't decorated or embellished with some form of the East Lake motifs. Surprisingly, although it belonged to one of the most well known and prolific businessmen of Oregon there are surprisingly few pictures of the house that survive.

As to being haunted, very possible. CM Forbes suffered from occipital neuralgia which - while painful, isn't deadly. Yet his wife found him dead from mysterious circumstances just 15 minutes or so after leaving him before to go downstairs. Some think that his wife had something to do with it, others think his ghost haunts the apartments that were built on the site of the house in the 1950's - all around though, an incredible gem to lose architecturally and a lot of mystery that surrounded it's owner!
