Since my introduction to the World Wide Web and the availability of these vintage pictures, I seem to make more of a romantic and physical connection to these men than anyone my age or younger. Don't misunderstand, the modern man is a treat for the eyes but there is something more genuine and sexier than the toned, polished and manicured muscle clones we see today.

It may also be my fascination with the men I see in the movies from the 30s and 40s. What were called the "Matinee Idols" are drop-dead gorgeous and many of the secondary actors are also worthy of praise. Just this week after watching two of the "Shadow" movies, I discovered a new vintage beauty, Kane Richmond who portrayed the title character. Google his images and you'll see what I mean.

Last month I captured a photo from Vellohomo-franco's blog of what appears to be a young soldier, possibly from the Civil War, who poses with luminescent eyes and a haunting expression that broke my heart. What a story that man could tell. Perhaps my interest in these historical heartthrobs is that they are simply part of our past, unreachable and unattainable. And that makes me want them all the more.

Most likely my connection to these men is due to the fact that I am now a vintage man for this period in history, but I will fade into the past like many others, with no pictures on the internet to offer a glimpse of a life lived without notoriety or adulation. After all, we can't all be "Matinee Idols".

It does feel difficult to admit that we're well into the 21st. :)
