We have this same nonsense appearing in the UK now, I do the same as you, telling them that I'm not doing their job for them. It's not the staff's fault tho, just those up the managerial chain trying to save money. I've now switched my shopping to another supermarkey chain who, so far, still have their cashiers.
I don't understand: does it mean that this employee checks that everything you have in your bags or your cart appears on the receipt? If so that's totally dumb and even more boring than being an actual cashier. There's a supermarket nearby where I sometimes go to, and I always use their self-checkout which come by groups of four and one employee for eight checkout. He/she is only there to manage the machines in case they show an error. And one cannot exit without using the barcode that's on the receipt to open the automatic gate.
Walmart is one of those stores I will go to only if I have to. I don't like self-checkout but will use it rather than stand in a line for 30 minutes or more. There's no receipt checker here anywhere but in Sam's Club and they scan random items - what that does, who knows???? And we're doing less and less shopping there, too.
Purchasing Power: The consumer is free to purchase where he wants.
I suggest that more people use it. I also will say that there is a tremendous amount of theft taking place at self-check-out registers.
Personally, I'm not a fan of them. Nor am I a fan of doing someone else's job if I'm not getting paid (discount). I'm also not interested in subsidising someone's wage (tipping).
I hate those self check out machine for many reasons. One is that it takes place for a person to have a job. Another irritation is that those wanting to see our bill on the way out and this is most outrageous in Costco when you did pay in front of a real cashier.
I dislike Walmart as much as anyone, and shop I there as little as possible, but this post is based on a misunderstanding.
The lady checking receipts is not checking self-checkout receipts. She is checking ALL receipts, whether you used self-checkout or not. Walmart has done this for years. Before they had self-checkout, they had someone checking everyone’s receipts as they left the store. Why? Presumably they’re trying to stop people from stealing merchandise and simply walking out the door with it.
The real question is: why does Walmart feel the need to do this, when no other store does it? Perhaps it says something about the type of customer who typically shops at Walmart.

Fortunately, I live in a city where Walmart isn't allowed.

Costco is the worse of all.
Laurent - Not being able to exit without using the barcode to open the doors is a very good idea.
ReplyDeleteRamón - You are lucky.

And, the sodas should be complimentary!
ReplyDeleteLarry - I remember that, back when I used to shop there, before self-checkout arose.
ReplyDeleteYou mean they're not complimentary?
ReplyDeleteHeck that might be why they're checking receipts.
LeftField - Haha!
