ReplyDeleteIF "trickle down" really worked, even better than Reagan claimed it would, then unions might not be really needed. But since it has been proven to, usually, not work to Reagan's suspicion, then unions are needed for the good of all.
ReplyDeleteMany have portrayed union leaders as "bad people", taking union dues from workers so they can have a lavish lifestyle. Not a lot different from CEOs and similar who keep too much money for themselves, paying workers as little as they can get away with to maximize the CEO's "take". Although it has been proven many times over that CEOs who invest in their business and invest in their people make more money in the long run than those who do not. Which makes money for everybody, including the shareholders.
The prosperity of the later 1950s could be attributed to the spread of unions and how much more money was in circulation, plus the growth of the USMilitary (and all that that meant for manufacturing and more good-paying jobs).
Yet the "conservatives" will always ask "Why should I pay a worker more money to do the same job they are doing now?" As if the increase in pay is not warranted or necessary. Then the union member has the option to "strike" and hobble the Company's operations.
Unions have their place in the whole scheme of things to keep employers honest, especially the ones who tend to be greedy. No business owner wants to have a third party telling them how to do their business, BUT sometimes, it IS necessary. Even legislation to encourage such, too.
Better pay can attract better people. Better people who have a choice of whom or what they work for. Better people who can make the company more money, typically. Better people who can cause fewer problems and make work "fun", as it should be.
I'm a retired teacher of 37years of teaching in high schools, college and university.
ReplyDeleteHere teachers has an union to represent us and our «boss» is the provincial government.
But many other fields of workers are in private businesses and also are part of unions.
unions since the 60's did help us to have better wages but also better working conditions and side advantages.
For the last cartoon, some aren't for us from union gains but straight up by our governements laws to help our people.
In province of Québec, a child under 16yo cannot work unless he is part of a family farm or with some restrictions to not interfere with his studies.
As we have universal health care and medicare too what the unions do is to have some private health care insurances to add more coverage and at a good price for their membbers. But without it, we are all covered by the universal heatlh care.
For maternity leave, here the federal unemployment insurance is providing money for women AND men to take care of the new born for 3 months and more depending of each case.
For the weekends, lot of workers can enjoy them and more with some special holidays on the national calendar.
Vacation is mandatory for each workers. What is special here in my province of Québec is that the last two weeks of July ia the «construction holiday» when ALl construction workers are in vacation.
Teachers have always two months of vacation.
For the social security qnd medicare, as a retired man over 65yo I have each month a «Older security» check from the federal and another one from the provincial «Rent Reginme of Quebec» wich add $1200 to my teacher's retirement pay of $1 700. Those number are after income taxes taken.
Those taxes will be given back in part after my income tax report will be sent in next February.
Those are some of what is going on fiscaly here in Canada.
Cdadbr - Absolutely! Better pay for workers puts more money into circulation and that's better for the economy.
ReplyDeleteJiEL - You have it so much better up there.
