2023.0810.0003...

This is a long article, but the link has an option to listen to it...

Coastal biomedical labs are bleeding more horseshoe crabs with little accountability

Depending on which state they're harvested in, the crabs are either taken by hand from the beaches or pulled up from the bottom of the ocean with nets. Hundreds are piled on top of each other in boats, loaded into trucks and delivered to bleeding facilities. There, lab technicians pierce the crabs through their hearts and drain them alive, sometimes for eight minutes, which can deplete them of more than half their volume of blue blood. In Massachusetts, some of the bled crabs are then sold to be killed and used as bait. In states like South Carolina and New Jersey, the animals are delivered back to the fishermen, who return them to the ocean.

Taken from a different source, but I did not link to it...

Regulators estimate about 15% of the crabs die in the bleeding process.

  2. @Big Dude---The first few paragraphs of the article will give you your answer. It's very weird and another example of how inept we are at protecting the inhabitants of our planet, because of MONEY, MONEY, MONEY.

  3. I saw this article with horseshoe crabs several years ago. The last I knew the main thing we used the blood for is to test our own medicines and vaccines to see if they're contaminated , but I don't know if it's used another things or not . I know when I go down to slaughter Beach in the summer the beach is generally polluted with horseshoe crabs to the point where you can't even walk on the beach. Of course Slaughter Beach is one of the main breeding grounds of horseshoe crabs. So many horseshoe crabs that die natural causes usually pollute the beach which is how it got its name Slaughter Beach.

  7. Just back from the orthopedist for a cranky knee check, had a steroid shot which was ineffective. Now awaiting insurance approval for gel injection which should do the trick. While sitting in the exam room and waiting for the doctor, I read the brochure on the gel substance and guess where they get the goo? From CHICKEN COMBS!!!

Medical researchers scare the crap out of me. I mean, who sits around and says, "Hey guys/gals, let chop off some chicken combs and see what we can make from them! Neat idea, huh?"

Blue blood from a horseshoe crab, combs from chickens, what else don't I want to know about concerning this subject?
