    From Google---the first notable rear-engined car dates back to 1886, when Karl Benz launched the Patent-Motorwagen. The concept gained more traction in the 1930s and remained somewhat popular until the 1980s.

    Austro-tchèque Hans Ledwinka était un génie de la technique, et ses désirables voitures Tatra étaient de conception avancée, admirées à ce jour. Sa succession a dû poursuivre Volkswagen our avoir enfreint plusieurs de ses brevets.
