I want to give a Great Big, HUGE, Thank You! to the two men who stopped to help Jerry and me when we experienced a flat tire on our way home from the naked beach.
About half-way home we picked up a giant screw. I mean, the head was as big as my thumbnail. Since the tire had not gone flat, I hoped the screw would stay put until we got home and could call AAA. Alas, the screw worked itself out and the tire immediately went flat. We safely pulled over and called AAA.
While we were waiting, a white van pulled over and two men got out. I thought, "What an odd truck for AAA." Turned out to be two painters who were offering their assistance. Jerry and I had already pulled everything out of the trunk, including the spare, so they went to work right away. In no time at all they were done, and they wouldn't accept any payment.
Turned out, both of them were from Ukraine.

ReplyDeleteI would have offered a quick blow job in the back of their van; I don't know if that would have been a reward for them or for me.
ReplyDeleteI've received offers of assistance when changing a flat tire, and been pulled out of the ditch more than once on snowy or muddy rural roads. Had a neighbor who used to assist as several mud holes near his house as a retirement project, and got several tows from him before I wised up and got a 4WD high clearance Subaru!

Firstly I am glad that both you and Jerry made it safely on the roadside despite that uninvited screw.
ReplyDeleteIn my line of work I'm used to dealing with all kinds of engine/flat-tires/you-name-it issues and what goes along starting with sending towing services. And yes it's surprisingly rare that people tell me "someone stopped by and is currently helping with this or that". But when it happens I can feel - really - what a relief it is for them not to be alone.
Should I translate it, I'd call it the gratuity of kindness. As with the barely French speaking Arab woman I had on the phone this afternoon who gave her phone to an anonymous man passing by so he could explain to me precisely what the car issue actually was and gave me her precise location. Nothing much to him, so much for her to quickly get the dear help she and her baby needed.
I do understand how grateful one feels when a helping hand shows up. And those two men who stopped by for you and Jerry? Being Ukrainians certainly adds up to what we already feel for their people!

Nice to hear a happy story for a change. I work with a few Eastern Europeans and they're really wonderful. I'm so glad you & Jerry got rescued by a couple!
