Wednesday Positivities...
The first comment about "doing one's best" can have many pitfalls, unfortunately. As printed, it can be interpreted to me "I did what I could. IF you don't like that, _____ it." BUT if the not-printed continuation has to do with "I'll see what went wrong THIS time, to make the next time outcome better", THAT can be good. Which can also fall into the classification of "continuous improvement".
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, using the "I did my best" as a reason for mediocre outcomes, continually, can lead to our current society a bit. When I was in kindergarten, I always colored "in the lines" and got little praise for it. As others (even some younger people) scribbled their colors, going outside of the lines, yet they got praise. Fun participation was the operative orientation rather than "a work of art". I didn't like taking pains to make things look as intended as others got praised for a job LESS well done. Rather than a coloring book with thick black lines to color within, others should have had a blank sheet of paper, by observation, onto which they could indulge their artistic talents.
That last one? Yeah, I've worked with and for those people. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteThe last one---
ReplyDeleteI could write a book or two---
I had one VP that did not like folks making eye contact with her. She would pass you in the halls and if you looked at her dead in her eyes and greet her she would not say a damn thing. She also did not like being touched. We were in a director, managers meeting, and another manager was called up and acknowledged for her years of service or something like that. The manager hugged her. If we weren't in a professional setting you could have heard the gasps. Instead, everyone looked at each other as if to say "Oh, no!" Had a VP who would fire people that could outshine her. She messed with the wrong one. She fired this director and wanted to keep her on for a bit the director said hell now. Came back the next day and it was like she was never there. That was company gossip for weeks.
